Lest you think this is just a Texas thing, our next door neighbor, Louisana, has it's own, highly unique, culture. You don't see Texans telling them how to live their lives...

Actually, you have a point. People from California (born and bred native here) are used to being accepted, and accepting everything.
Once they move, they can't understand that maybe other people don't feel the same way. Or why.
If you move to a more conservative established area, and have a completely different lifestyle, you expect people to welcome you with open arms.
And when they don't, some people take it as an affront to their sense of self.
