I think there's a stealth mode. It's probably meant to be useful for when you want to catch up on things but are (unsuccessfully) trying to avoid being dragged into the Lounge for a few drinks and long-winded conversation, likely 'bout something important, like whether llama spit is more lubricating than WD40, or what "real" chocolate is, or whether Stephen Fry is a comedic, geekic, or literary god (or perhaps an ingratiating daemon).
