On my Kindle:
Never a true "cover". It is stored and carried to and from locations in a padded zippered case, but is naked when being used.
On my Tablet (currently my more frequent reading device):
Storage around the house and when reading it is in a classic flip-open case. For transport, the tablet with the cover is then put in a padded zippered case.
The Kindle is light and I don't need a cover to aide holding it. The tablet is a bit too heavy to hold on its own. I usually use the case as an easel stand with the tablet on a table. Occasionally I do hand hold the tablet and then the case improves my grip.
