You can upgrade your Kobo to at least 4.3.8945 and keep the tiled home screen (via a patch).
I held up on upgrading past that until I screwed up the database one time and the device upgraded as part of the reset. I still prefer the tiled home screen, but the new homescreen gets better as you use it. And I do think the new firmware makes things faster (searches, for instance).
