About 300 miles and with four islands between here and there. If the wind shifts to the southeast (Kona wind) we might get a little VOG (volcanic smog), but that's about it.
The break out is on Kilauea (one of three active volcanoes on the Big Island and the location of Volcanoes National Park) East Rift Zone. The term "break out" is used because Kilauea has been erupting continuously since January 1983, and this is just a different location of the vent. (
Google Puʻu ʻŌʻō)
Besides the 3 active volcanoes on the Big Island (Kilauea, Mauna Loa, and Hualalai) there is also Haleakala on Maui, and Loihi which is under water and busy building another island.
About 1000 people are being mandatory evacuated, and some houses may be destroyed in this break out, but that's the chance you take when you build in a volcanic risk zone 1 or 2. That's why insurance is so high there.
