Well, I don't know about your device, but my Touch HD is also unreliable with series metadata.
For epub v2:
meta name="calibre:series" content="Erlebnisse einsamer Menschen" OK
meta content="Erlebnisse einsamer Menschen" name="calibre:series" Bad.
etc.
Didn't test it with a lot of books, though.

No luck with epub v3.
