Transferring metadata via device?

I have Calibre running on two separate PCs in different locations. In the past I'd been keeping them in sync manually by just importing books to both one by one. Now the number of books I've got has grown, I started adding a Collection value to my existing LIbrary metadata to create shelves in my ereader (I have a Kobo Aura). Now I want to duplicate this extra metadata in the other Calibre instance.

My first thought was I could just upload the metadata from the Kobo to Calibre, but I can't see an option for that,. Second thought was delete the books in the second instance and repopulate from the Kobo. That doesn't seem to work either: I get the books, but without the metadata. Have I missed a setting somewhere, or is there some other way to achieve the same thing - maybe exporting to a catalogue, then re-importing from there?

Thanks for any advice
