Regarding pipe clogs.
If the clog is a build-up of soap and other organic sludge you might be able to keep things in running order with an enzyme treatment. This can be as simple as a cup of cheap yogurt or some milk that has gone sour. You can also buy granular enzyme/bacterial treatments commercially -- at least here in the states.
My "Big 3" treatments are enzymes first, then chlorine bleach (hide it with the laundry supplies), then commercial de-cloggers. But (Important!) don't let them mix! Bleach especially can pose safety issues with some other cleaners. And if you still have to call a plumber, let him/her know if there might be some leftover chemicals in the pipe.
I use the sour milk/yogurt/enzyme stuff all the time. I also use vinegar on a regular basis since we have a well and our water is very "hard."
