I seemed to stumble into root. I installed the King Root app, but it initially failed to root. I tried a few other methods as well. Nothing. The next day, I checked my Note and found that I now had root access. Did the King Root app keep phoning home until someone found an exploit to root the thing? Anyway, I deleted King Root and installed SuperSU.

I wish I could give you a step-by-step process as to how to achieve it, but I can't. As I said, I seemed to stumble into root. Maybe someone else can. Most conventional rooting techniques do not seem to work on the Note or the Max 2. There is no custom recovery (yet) for the Note, so nothing can be flashed to root the Note.

I emailed Booxtor, and in his reply, he said he would try to root the Note as soon as he had one he could spare from stock.

I haven't yet done much with my root yet, other than install Titanium Backup and the root version of Button Savior. I might try a CPU app, like No Frills CPU Control, and do some minor tweaking. One advantage to having used Android E-Ink devices before is that I already have a sense of what apps look fine on E-Ink, and which ones have invisible menus on E-Ink.

XDA is normally the place to go for help from devs, but there has never been much interest over there in Onyx devices. Not yet, at least.

Having had several Android E-Ink devices before, I can say that the Note (in spite of any limitations/bugs it may have) has come closer to realizing the potential of Android E-Ink than any device I've ever tried. The combination of size and performance makes the Note feel "just right" to me: large enough for pdfs, but light enough to do a lot of book reading. The Note is quicker than any 6 inch Android E-Ink device I've seen. For my needs, the Note is, if not a bull's eye, pretty darn close.
