I like the basic ideas behind the Oasis 1. I’d always loved the size and shape of my original Kobo Aura and was very disappointed when Kobo abandoned the idea of a small, high-end model.
The first thing that bothered me about the Oasis was the lack of a way to charge the cover by itself. I think that was incredibly stupid.
More importantly, I’ve had issues with mine; possibly it’s just my particular device. The Oasis itself (without cover) gets anywhere from two to six hours of use (wifi off, light level 13, consistently). With the cover on, I get a lot of error messages about the cover being not connected properly. Sometimes I can fix it by just reseating the cover but sometimes it locks up completely and I have to reset it. At other times it doesn’t recognize that the cover is there at all so I often don’t realize anything is wrong until I get low battery warnings. I bought a spare cover but that didn’t act any differently (and, of course, I can’t leave my extra cover plugged in to charge by itself, which would have been convenient).
I’d hoped that the next Oasis would have incremental improvements. Add just enough size and weight to increase the onboard battery capacity to a solid ten to twelve hours (I find mine almost too thin to hold comfortably anyway). Make optional covers -- both independently-charging and non-charging versions. Strengthen the connection between ereader and covers. Add waterproofing. Bump up the storage capacity.
I was shocked that after all the effort of designing and promoting the idea of a small, high-end device they just abandoned it completely. They buried it so suddenly and thoroughly it seemed like they were trying to pretend it never existed.
Despite its flaws I still use my Oasis 1 quite a lot (alternating mostly with Kobo H2O2, original Kobo Aura, and Nook Glowlight 3). The Oasis screen is by far the best of any of my Kindles and I do like the small size. I tend to use it with the cover on; I find it easier to hold onto than the bare Kindle and it still feels small and light enough.
I tried to like the Oasis 2 but it felt way too heavy and awkward to me and the edges seemed really sharp; I returned it fairly quickly.
