Google isn't dropping tablet support, just their own tablet lineup. Any manufacturer can still use android for pretty much any device.

It is true that Apple dominates the tablet space, and hence the app ecosystem takes better advantage of ipads as opposed to android tablets. For e-ink devices, android is the only option if you need app variety and customization.
