1/2" to 7/8" is 3/8 of an inch, but the Kindle Keyboard is slightly less than 4-7/8" and the width of the tablet is slightly over 4-1/2" – so the actual difference is closer to 7/16 of an inch, which is about 7/32 of an inch on each side. And, because the tablet is thicker (deeper) that helps snug it up. I won't say it won't move at all, but it's not going to move much (especially since you say you hold your tablet vertically most (or all) of the time).
(I think I should go to the metric system here.)
Honestly, it's going to work if you get the model for the Kindle 3.
