02xda2: Looks like your solution will be the most flexible and straightforward. I will be able to use the FTDI chip drivers. I believe that I have found the proper chip for the 5 to 1.8 volt regulator:

hius07: Your solution looks the simplest and cheapest. I would guess that the drivers would be found here:

“Back in the day” (I am getting a bit old), the USB to serial converter cables made by Prolific were very robust. Hope that they still make good stuff.
