To update firmware? Nope. I just download the update.bin manually via PC and copy to the Kindle via USB. I’m actually using an older firmware version that still works with Kindlets.

If one only reads DRM-free side loaded books, one never has to connect the Kindle to the internet or register with Amazon at all.
