Gack! We have two or more shipments from Amazon hit out front door every week. Somebody needs to step in and save us from ourselves!
Here's a good tutorial on how to install the Google Play appstore on your Fire. This is the tutorial that I personally followed, and it worked perfectly for me. Be sure and read it entirely before you start, so you have an idea of what's coming next. But it's easy, step-by-step.

I've noticed that some of the apps I use are paid on the Fire appstore but free on Google Play. Same app. Example: "OpenVPN" (a technical app probably not useful to many here, but it's one that I need personally). This one was pay on Fire appstore, free on Google. At least that was the status of things when I installed it several months ago.
Here's a couple of free apps for the Kindle Fire (from Google Play) that I find very good and very useful.
"VLC" for videos:

"Smart AudioBook Player" for audiobooks:

"Piktures" for photos:

"ASUS File Manager" for low level access to stored content:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...us.filemanager The best known name in this category of apps used to be "ES File Explorer". Years ago this was a great app. Nowadays it's a totally horrid ad-infested mess. Total trash now. Can't even hardly figure out how to use its interface. ASUS File Manager is a 10000% better replacement. It has a very useful mode where it turns your Fire into a webserver. You can access it wirelessly from any of your computers and upload/download files over the web. Very handy for getting stuff onto and off of your Fire.
"WiFi Analyzer" for investigating and testing a WiFi environment - to find the best channel for your router, best placement for strongest signal, etc. (definitely a technical app!):
