I wouldn't expect that to happen. While connected, you are at most copying a file to the device. If the laptop goes to sleep before that is finished, the device should disconnect and reject the upgrade when it tries.

In any case, have you tried a factory reset using the buttons? If that works, it will save you opening the device.
