Maxim Gorky was the pseudonym of Aleksey Maksimovich Peshkov, (1868- 1936), a short-story writer, novelist, and playwright. He wrote naturalistic and sympathetic accounts of tramps and social outcasts which were reminiscent of his own life.
G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936) wrote a sympathetic introduction.
The translator is named as J.M. Shirazi in some editions, and J.K.M. Shirazi in others. His or her date of death is not known, but the first edition was in 1918 so this ebook is in the public domain.
The ebook contains five stories, all relating to the sufferings of poor people at the hands of the rich and powerful. The stories are 'Creatures that once were men', 'Twenty-six men and a Girl', 'Chelkash', 'My Fellow Traveller', and 'On a Raft'.
