So don't do that, carry a charger of some sort or don't stay away from home for more than a month.
It was probably the public laptop that was failing to list the contents of the USB storage, not a fault of anything on the Kindle's storage.
(Your external PC does not read from the Kindle's storage, the Kindle's kernel does that and then repeats it to the external PC. So what you claim can not happen.)
If you did not force the Kindle to reformat the USB storage, you screwed it up.
It has some special format options not normally available in a Windows format application.

Then re-install all of our add-ins.
Remember that on 5.9.4 you must use the booklet version of KUAL.
The document version of KUAL may leave a 'ghost' image behind after you remove the document. It does no harm, ignore it for now, we will release something to get rid of it someday, RSN.
