That was also my reaction, "eh, what's he mean by that I wonder?"
But I gave crich the benefit of the doubt and assumed he was thinking "...It is a sad loss to the world and even sadder if he is

BTW I understand why Hawking didn't get a Nobel, but I don't understand why the Brits didn't give him a knighthood or make him a peer of the realm. Maybe he forewarned the transients in 10 Downing St, and the Palace he would respectfully decline.
