Don't pay the $20. If you message customer support to ask them to remove ads, they'll do it for free (the first time). I'm on my second Kindle, and the support person simply told me she'd remove the special offers and asked me to check if they went away.
She didn't say she waived the $20 fee (like they usually do), but she also didn't say it cost something, and my card wasn't charged.
