You know what I have found works very well?? Those paint can opener/keys that you can get at most hardware stores.

They are small enough to fit in next to the motor, but then they have that bent part that you can tuck behind the motor, and then you can pull on the metal handle/loop.

I keep one of those hung right near the sink where I usually clean the fountains, along with some bottle brushes and an old toothbrush (for scrubbing the motor threads).

I've got it down to a science ... from gross to sparkling clean in 15 minutes.
