I'm no engineer but does the Paperwhite hang if you're reading with the device plugged into an electrical outlet? If it doesn't, it would make me think battery.
The solution, for me, is a no brainer. The newer Paperwhites are better than the first edition anyway. I didn't wait for my Paperwhite One to die. Of course, a friend is still mourning the death of her Paperwhite One because she used it to play games that won't play on the newer Paperwhite or her Voyage.
