Back-light is useful if you forbid if to check the ambiance light.
Even with decent ambient light, my ereader is much better with the front-light turned on to the lowest setting, because that improves the contrast so much. The background is so much whiter with the front-light turned on, even at the lowest possible level.

Higher contast = less eye strain for me.
