I ordinarily prefer a different default file format for export too, but I did come across one benefit to the .png file format: if you import it into Evernote, Evernote treats it like something you composed natively in Evernote, and will perform handwriting recognition on it so that you can search it with your other notes.
It's a work around for the lag that you experience when writing in Evernote. You can also import the png into OneNote, but I'm not sure as of yet whether OneNote will perform handwriting recognition.
