Why do you assume it should be open sourced? It is not a requirement that all apps in Android must be open source, either. Google does it with open source API for Android, and proprietary API in Google Play Services. Onyx can do the same if they wish with their own proprietary API that allows their apps a different access to hardware than 3rd party apps that are not optimized for Onyx.
