Don't forget, though, that the devices with flush bezels also have toughened glass screens, which are much, much stronger than the plastic screens of the older devices.

I get the impression that most covers are more about simple dust protection than impact protection. To protect against impact, you want something which will deform, thus absorbing energy, rather than being rigid.
