I think I still want to be able to go to Kobo's and other's sites and download books. I turned on WiFi and finished the syncing (I aborted partway through when setting up the Kobo on my computer). Along with the synced books it downloaded the update software, but at least it asked if I wanted to "update now?" I clicked "no" then connected to my computer and deleted the update file. I plan to keep WiFi off unless I want to look for books (which will be rarely). It will probably sneak in the update at some point if I'm not careful, but at least now I know how to get around it.
