Daniel Abraham's "The Dagger and the Coin" series has good male and female leads and an entertaining story.

Great North Road by Peter F. Hamilton is a doorstop novel about future society. Male lead for the cop/murder mystery portion and a female lead for the "alien monster hunting portion".
