I am also using the Max 2 on a Mac (Sierra) and had to install the official Android File Transfer software (
https://www.android.com/filetransfer/) in order to access the Max 2 via USB.
However, I have an issue and it would help me immensely if you could tell me if it's the same in your setup: when I change stuff in the Storage app on the Max 2, such as creatg a new folder, it doesn't show up in the Android File Transfer application unless I reboot the Max 2. Do you see the same phenomenon? FWIF, changes in Android File Transfer show up immediately on the Max 2. Thanks!
