UPDATE: It appears there will be no Audiobook "app" for Google. The audiobooks will be downloaded and played through the Google for Books app. As you may have already determined, Google Play downloads books in a secure way, unless perhaps you have an unlocked phone (I can't find them anywhere). Probably means they will get no love from me.

Did you power off and then turn the phone on again? That generally at least lets you see the files.
I'm hesitant to download one of the free stories for fear that it will then wipe out the 50 percent off, since that's supposed to be for your first purchase--I don't want them to count a freebie as a purchase.
