My main problem with portable software is if multiple users use the same PC then you need to add it to each profile. When you install a program it's available to all users.
As for Windows 10 my main complaint is how much is running in the background. I also hate having control taken from me. I need to figure out a way to optimized this laptop for performance. In the old Windows 98 days I used a program called Tune Up for that. Software was trustworthy then.
