The Kobo is really primitive and undeveloped in this regard. There is no excuse for it. Even open-source and small-time reading apps offer better navigation options than Kobo. Kobo should fix this.

Maybe I'm mis-understanding you, but the current Kobos have multiple tap zone options for changing pages, one of which is tap on the left side to advance a page. And I believe it has been this way for quite a while (at least 7 years.)
