If you don't have a free 'system maintenance person' fixing things, you probably spent more than a more modern 'Refurb" would cost
I am surprised that such an old system is still functioning. Almost every system (major, business class, brands) need some sort of $$ repair in 5 years.

Only on my old laptop. For what I do there, v1.41 works fine ... and I never update for the sake of updating, there always needs to be a reason.
And the Laptop still works fine.
I keep it offline, and use it mostly as a project machine.
I replaced the HDD once, because I wanted a bigger drive, and added some RAM, all else is original.
I do use with external keyboard, mouse and monitor though.
And it sees a lot of external HDD use.
Much of what you say is strictly not true. If you buy a decent system in the first place, I find it can last you many many years, especially if you treat it well, including cleaning out the dust now and then, perhaps reinstalling Windows on occasion.
Still a damn good machine, and more than adequate for what I use it for.
It is a home machine though, not a work one, so no doubt treated more respectfully, had less tinkering perhaps, but certainly in my case, worked as hard, if not harder, than many work machines.
P.S. All my computers last me a long time. Even my old Apple IIE (first computer) probably still works, I just retired it when I moved on, same with my first Windows PC. I've retired a few, but all were working fine when I did it. All except my Win XP beast of a desktop, which I built myself, and probably drove too hard, as it developed a mysterious ailment ... probably due to the huge number of things that ran on it (3 optical drives, 3 big HHD, Superdisk, etc). It was built just before Dual Core came out, its only failing really (that and no SSD) ... apart from what seemed to be a mysterious motherboard ailment. It stopped working not long after I added a Blu-ray burner to it.
