Nevermind. I was using the kindle face down and only looking at my serial terminal. (Since there was some delicate soldering on the back, I was reluctant to move it around.) Flipping it over, I found a menu which allowed me to quit the diagnostics and get to the login prompt.
Everything else wen pretty much according to the guide; got rid of the root password, ran the jb.sh script, and KUAL works!
btw, I used a sparkfun-branded 3V3 FDTI USB serial converter with a Sparkfun bidirectional level shifter. (I got the 1.8V for the low side of the shifter from an Adafruit adjustable breadboard power supply.) I'm not a huge fanboy of Sparkfun, just had this stuff already and wanted to make use of what I already had.
