I do have Robert Dunbar's The Pines and The Shore. Isn't The Pines about The Jersey Devil?

I honestly can't remember. It does take place in New Jersey. It's also the first of a trilogy, but I've never read the other two.
You know how you sometimes have a great memory of reading something (in horror), with an oppressive evil that seems to dominate a book? That was the kind of book this was for me. I read it when it first came out. It's a character-driven novel, back when only a few authors could write horror novels with actual characters in them. (Stephen King, Bentley Little, and Peter Straub immediately come to mind.)
I think I've just convinced myself to go back and re-read it!
