What is 'author' in a feed used for?

I'm updating some recipes, and noted that the feed structure supports 'author' for each article in a news feed. Since I had to parse other structures, I updated that also, but I don't see it set anywhere. It isn't visible in the epub output as far as I can see, and doesn't make it into the packaged HTML.

What's it used for?
