Thank you. That's just the kind of insight that I needed. The post is going down as soon as I finish this one.

I am definitely not very familiar with all of the legal issues involved, but one thing in the DMCA that gave me pause is that they put the onus on copyright holders to inform them if they've violated their copyrights. To me, a site presenting the books should be responsible for getting permission.
