Without going into a lot of detail think about the iLiad battery as having a finite number of charge cycles where each cycle is equivalent to one full charge from a dead battery standpoint. For example, if the finite number of charges available is 100 then recharging when the battery is 25% depleted would give you 400 charge cycles, 50% depleted would give you 200 cycles.

In reality it's not that simple, but it is a decent approximation of how it works. For any lithium based battery it is best to keep them topped off and not to let them run down completely.
