I have always had trouble reading print books because of how much light I need to read comfortably. Even with good table lamps there were shadows etc. to deal with. The Oasis is front-lit, and having the light all the way up when reading in a normally lit room doesn't bother my eyes at all. It is that light that makes it possible for me to read for hours per day. I love the sharp contrast that the light gives.

In a dark room, I have the light at 10-12 to start with, and turn it down as my eyes adjust to 8-9. That is in a totally dark room.

Even as a young person, I needed a LOT of light to read. I'm pushing 60, and have worn glasses since I was 5-6. I wear a Progressive lens now, and can read the Oasis at night in bed without my glasses with the screen 7-8 inches from my eyes.

Once something is past 12" away from my eyes, without correction I am legally blind.
