To avoid KFX, I download using an older version of Kindle for PC (I'm assuming you are using Windows). I'm using version 1.17, which is available
here. (Look at the list on the right.) With that version you can download books and they won't be KFX.
You will need to go into Tools/Options and uncheck 'Automatically install updates when they are available without asking me.'
