Ummm.... one local gas station was traced back as a common point in a card hacking case. Evidently, the card reader had been modified to record the card information and the "security" camera mounted overhead recorded your fingers typing in your PIN. I was chatting with one staffer at the gas station I use most often and he was telling me how the card readers in their stores and pumps are secured. If the reader is disconnected and reconnected, a hardware check and firmware download is triggered. If the hardware check fails or the download fails to download and install properly, the card reader is locked out. If a replacement card reader is installed, it's a multi-step process to enable it. This courtesy of several local stores that were having their card readers replaced by hacked units -- a Whole Foods store held the record for having their card readers replaced 3 or 4 times before they went to the secured units.

Damn.... Canada 3, USA 4 in shootout. Hockey in a snowstorm.
