Sorry Dickie but all books on my kindle have been via Calibre.
I make the directories (See Attachment) the transfer the books from Calibre then transfer the books to the relevant directory on the Kindle.
I am computer literate and what you said in your post , re transfer via calibre is what I've been doing since I bought the kindle from Amazon many years ago.
Having said all that I'm still no further forward with getting the transfer correct.
If you look at the pictures I've sent you will see that I'm using Calibre
