There is no reason an independent author can't be good. And I have no reason to believe The Verge are acting as shills.

Also, I'm fairly out of touch anymore, but even I recognized about half the authors there (even if I wasn't familiar with the series) and they are all established.

I would just have liked to see Stephen Baxter or Frank Herbert in there. But I'm willing to admit it's because I'm a geezer.
