The 3rd gen kindle (so-called Kindle Keyboard) was the first Kindle to have wifi, according to wikipedia.
And on an unrelated note, my Kindle Paperwhite 3 has wifi only, I tether it to my phone (EDITED to add: via my phone's wifi hotspot) as needed.
