I like quite a few Indy authors who publish on Smashwords. There are also a lot of established authors who have regained control of their backlist, small publishers looking for convenience, etc. Reasonably well known authors who can be found at Smashwords include Kevin J. Anderson, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, etc.
