The other thought that occurs to me is that this whole thread needs to be wrapped in "spoiler" tags - any book that gets mentioned here has its (otherwise possibly surprising) end spoiled.
The other problem is that the most tragic-ending books usually offer some positive note in their conclusion. Even that most famous of tragedies Romeo and Juliet offers the positive note that the long standing feud between the famlies has ended. Much the same might be said for many end-of-world books, once you've gotten so far down as to destroy the world then almost anything starts to look cheerful in comparison. And once you start admitting acceptance of a positive note, everything else becomes a matter of degree.
