Yes, there is a misconception that we all live in the Outback. According to the CIA Yearbook, about 90% of us live in eight conurbations, that's a higher concentration than US, UK or Canada, and way more than China, India etc.

NYC is the only US city with a larger population than Sydney or Melbourne. Toronto is similar, it's also bigger than everywhere except NYC.
