The highest point in Australia is Mt Kosciusko (7,310 ft), highest point in Texas is Guadalupe Peak (8,751 ft).
I am not sure about having the second largest telescope - maybe radio-telescope, we have 'lots' of those - but don't think we have any really big optical telescopes. The largest is probably at Siding Springs, where there are a bunch of optical 'scopes. Maybe they can configure them into a single device, I know that can be done with radio-scopes - not sure about optical. It's not that high there, but it is a long way from 'civilisation', so very little light pollution, and its very dry, so very clear.

Or that you were soon to get one.
I didn't realize except around the edges you are a desert.
