Sorry to hear about your trouble.
"Bear country" is expanding. Back in '78, when I was picking up road-killed deer in NJ I got a call to "drop everything" and pick up a bear that had been hit on the interstate. Back then we all knew there were a
few bears in the state, but it really was just a few. And I still didn't believe it until I saw it -- a well fed adult male that ran about 200 pounds.
We have bears throughout New Jersey now. Last year when I was babysitting my neighbors Koi pond I was approached by one. It didn't leave until I shouted at it, and even then it seemed reluctant to leave. Not good behavior in a bear.
They're a nuissance in the northwest corner of the state. Some have taken to breaking into kitchens.
