Please note that sometimes it displays a similar string, but the letters and numbers are a little different--when viewing different epub files that contain a page-map.xml file. The page numbers at the top (or bottom) of ADE are NOT always iii (1/2).
Deleting the page-map.xml file always solves the page-numbering problem (that is, page numbers generated by ADE--any version). After deleting the page-map.xml file inside the epub file, the page numbers (as generated by ADE) become normal and display the following:
1/600
which means that you're viewing page 1 of 600 pages (or however many pages are in the epub file, as generated by ADE; I chose a number out of the air when I chose 600, in case anyone wants to question where I came up with "600").
I hope I've provided enough details and clarification about this problem.

I think I'm with Rev Bob on this, but I'd need to see more details to understand it properly. The page numbering looks like what is common in the frontmatter for text books (Roman numerals and then restart the count when the text starts). And the second part could an expression to show that that page doesn't completely fit on the screen. The solution for you is to remove the page-map. But, I am curious about what is actually going on. Can you run it through the ScrambleEbook plugin and post it?
This curiosity is separate to removing the page-map. That is a reasonable request, just not one the rest of us understood the need for. I've never seen one, so had no idea how they behaved. And to be honest, still don't. Now I want to know.
